Green Roads CBD Oil for Pets

Who is Green Roads?

Green Roads is one of the largest CBD companies in the US, though it mostly focuses on the human cannabis market. They develop a range of traditional and more unusual products, such as CBD edibles and bath bombs. The brand was founded in 2013 by Laura Fuentes, who had been a licensed pharmacist for over two decades before turning to CBD in order to help a close family friend with their health issues.

Since then, Green Roads has grown into the largest privately-owned CBD company in the US (according to the Brightfield Research Group), with their CBD products sold in over 10,000 retail locations across the country—plus a line of CBD oils developed specifically for pets.

Best Green Roads CBD oils and treats for dogs

Green Roads offers three CBD oil products, all using the same CBD formula in different combinations to suit dogs of various sizes and needs. You can buy the Green Roads CBD oil in these three concentrations:

  • Large size, where a 1ml portion delivers 20mg of CBD. This helps support large dogs who weigh over 50 pounds.

  • Medium size, where a 1ml drop contains approximately 7mg of CBD.

  • Small size, where a 1ml drop delivers 2mg of CBD, which is designed for small dogs under 15 pounds, or those looking to treat very minor conditions.

Pet CBD Drops Large Dog

  • MCT and hemp seed carrier oil infusion

  • 1 cent per mg of CBD

Pet CBD Drops Medium Dog
  • Broad spectrum extract

  • MCT and hemp seed carrier oil infusion

  • 19 cents per mg of CBD

Pet CBD Drops Small Dog
  • Broad spectrum extract

  • MCT and hemp seed carrier oil infusion

  • 33 cent per mg of CBD

Price per mg of CBD

Across all three sizes of Green Roads CBD offers competitive value for money, but our calculations show a pretty wide difference between the cost per mg of CBD of the large and small concentrations. At approximately 33 cents, the small size comes in at a little above average price. The large size, on the other hand, offers one of the best cost ratios anywhere, at a hugely impressive 1 cent per mg of CBD!

Why does spectrum matter?

Green Roads pet CBD is a broad spectrum oil, which means it contains zero THC, as well as a narrower selection of cannabis compounds than other ‘full spectrum’ CBD brands.

As long as hemp plants are well-chosen, and the extraction process itself is carried out in a high-quality, sanitary environment, all dogs should be fine with either full spectrum or broad spectrum CBD oil. But, if we get to choose, we prefer full spectrum options.

Here’s our explainer on Full Spectrum vs Broad Spectrum vs Isolate CBD oil for dogs.

Why does carrier oil matter?

A carrier oil is simply the oil into which the CBD extracted is dissolved, which then helps the CBD be digested and absorbed into the body. Green Roads used a combination of MCT oil (fractionated coconut oil) and hemp seed oil, which is pressed from the seeds of the hemp plant and is not considered an active ingredient.

CBD extractions need a delivery vehicle or carrier. This can be in the form of treats, balms, or oils—which is probably the most traditional way of infusing plant therapeutics for medical use. There are many types of carrier oils out there, but the vast majority of CBD brands use either hemp seed oil or MCT (coconut) oil.

  • Hemp-seed oil is made from hemp seeds (no leaf or flower) and is known for its high fatty acid content. Fatty acids (often called Omegas) help improve joint and coat health as well as promoting full digestion of the CBD.
  • MCT oil is used in both pet and human oils, and is also rich in fatty acids.

A minority of other CBD oils use a different carrier oil, such as olive oil, canola oil, or in MediPet’s case, Vegetable Glycerin.

What are owners saying?

There aren’t a huge number of customer testimonials on Green Roads’ website, especially considering the size of this CBD company. However, those that have been left are generally highly positive.

Owners have reported positive effects from using Green Roads CBD oil on a variety of conditions, from minor pains and travel sickness, to serious complaints such as seizures: “My Newfie began having seizures in April…we began CBD to help with the anxiety and restlessness he experiences…it has certainly made a difference in helping to relax him.”

Others have noted that CBD allowed their dogs to transition off more traditional medications that may have undesirable side effects, although some comments pointed out that working out an effective dosage can take a little time.

Another category of owners left feedback on how CBD oil helped smooth the process of rescuing a pup from a shelter, and helping them acclimate to their forever home: “We bought these CBD drops and our dog immediately relaxed and acted more comfortable.”

Our verdict

Green Roads is one of the largest producers of CBD for humans, but it only makes one product for dogs: their CBD oil. Produced in three concentrations that are regularly independently tested for quality, this broad spectrum oil has all the signs of a good quality product with a cost per mg of CBD that ranges from reasonable to excellent, based on the concentration.

While we appreciate that Green Roads make their oil from American grown and produced hemp, we do think the oil could be improved by switching to organic products. However, judging by the customer reviews, this hasn’t stopped many doggos from finding significant benefits from Green Roads CBD.
