Charlotte’s Web is one the best-ranking CBD brands in our 2021 review, featuring in our overall list of the Best CBD Oils for Dogs, as well as each of our diagnosis-specific lists.

The reason they score so well? Charlotte’s Web uses their industry-leading farming practices and home-grown strain of hemp to create an extract containing CBD plus all six of the secondary beneficial cannabinoids we look for. This greatly increases the versatility of Charlotte’s Web’s products, making them effective across common canine conditions, from seizures and anxiousness to pain and restricted mobility.

Who is Charlotte’s Web?

The ‘Charlotte’ who gives her name to this Boulder Colorado CBD brand is Charlotte Figi, a young child who suffered from a rare and devastating form of epilepsy called Dravet syndrome. After trying out one of the first cannabis strains developed to be high in CBD and low in THC, Charlotte had noticeable reductions in her symptoms and was able to improve her quality of life.

This led to a huge rise in public awareness about the benefits of CBD, including a CNN documentary. When the Stanley Brothers, who had been developing hemp health supplements since 2009, heard about Charlotte’s story, they decided to launch an entire CBD brand centered around her legacy.

After years of expansion, Charlotte’s Web went public and has recently merged with Abacus Health, becoming a global leader in hemp-sourced CBD. This growth has meant that Charlotte’s Web is no longer a vertically integrated CBD company, but they still keep close relationships with their manufacturers, upholding quality standards and never releasing a product that doesn’t pass their check points.

Charlotte’s Web pet products are designed specifically “to support canine wellness,” and are produced with the same attention to detail as their human CBD.

Charlotte’s Web’s oil, made from their proprietary strain of hemp, contains a full-spectrum extract that’s blended with medium-chain triglyceride (MCT) oil, derived from coconuts to facilitate digestion.

Because it’s a full spectrum extraction, this CBD contains all of the other beneficial cannabinoids and cannabis compounds that the company has spent years carefully breeding into their crop. So, alongside CBD, your pup will also receive small doses of:

  • CBD-V, which has been shown to reduce the frequency and severity of seizures
  • CBG, which targets gut inflammation and distress
  • CBN, which aids sleep and appetite
  • CBC, which encourages mental acuity through new brain cell growth
  • And terpenes, which are aromatic compounds commonly associated with essential oils,  and have a soothing effect on people and pups alike

Charlotte’s Web’s oils also come with a graduated tincture dropper, allowing owners to take the guesswork out of dosages.

Cost per mg of CBD

Even though Charlotte’s Web is currently working towards full organic hemp status, their products continue to retail for competitive, non-organic prices. Both the 30ml and 100ml versions of the canine CBD oil offer great value for money at 12 cents and 9 cents per mg of CBD respectively. Each dropper serving provides approximately 17mg of CBD.

Additional ingredients

  • MCT oil is a widely-used CBD carrier. It’s rich in fatty acids, which promote speedy digestion, ensuring as little of the active ingredient is lost to the metabolism as possible.
  • Charlotte’s Web also offers this oil flavored with chicken to promote palatability.

Hemp topicals are a great way to target issues with a dog’s skin or joints. When you apply the treatment directly to the affected area, the potency of the active ingredients isn’t affected by digestion, which will also lessen the effect of any drug or botanical.

This topical product from Charlotte’s Web uses a 45omg whole hemp extract containing the same rich full spectrum CBD, which is then infused in 1.5oz of calming oils and plant botanicals. CBD balms are a great way to support skin health, as hemp is naturally high in Omega 3 and Omega 6 oils, which are crucial for maintaining and rebuilding a dog’s skin and coat. Additional ingredients included here, like turmeric and jojoba, have also been shown to soothe itchiness and redness.

Additional ingredients

Alongside hemp oil, Charlotte’s Web’s balm contains seed and fruit oils, such as sunflower seed oil, olive fruit oil, and jojoba esters. Natural anti-inflammatories such as beeswax and turmeric root powder help repair scrapes and dry and cracked paws.

Each of Charlotte’s Web’s dog treats uses the same base formula, which is then mixed with their CBD extract and further active ingredients.

For example, their Senior Chews help pups retain cognition through Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), which is an omega-3 fatty acid that’s a primary structural component of the brain. Their Joint Health Chews, on the other hand, include glucosamine to help support the structural integrity of connective tissues and encourage flexibility.

Cost per mg of CBD

All options are offered in 30 and 60 snack sizes, and each 4g chew contains approximately 2.5mg of broad-spectrum CBD. At 27 and 23 cents per mg of CBD depending on pack size, there’s only a small saving to be made by buying the bigger size.

Our verdict

Charlotte’s Web is a highly respected CBD brand that has only recently begun creating a dog-specific product line. We think the brand hit a home run, with a truly full-spectrum extract that’s appropriate across the most common canine conditions, from stress, anxiousness, and mobility issues to rashes and skin irritations.

While the brand is still working towards a 100 percent organic product range, there’s a whole lot to like about Charlotte’s Web. Check out the latest price of their CBD oil now.
